Dance
Everyone can understand the language of dance, and in Kansas City, dance ranges
from famous classical ballet troupes to amateur folk dance groups.
These listings are a sample of the variety of dance available here for patron
and participant.
American Dance Center, 11728 Quivira, (913) 451-3020. The official school
of The Kansas Regional Ballet, this professional dance center prepares students
in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and pantomime.
Kansas City Ballet, 1601 Broadway, (816) 931-2232. Professional resident
ballet company presenting classical and contemporary works at the Midland and
Lyric Theaters, October-April, plus the holiday favorite, "The Nutcracker."
Pre-professional ballet training is available
Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, 218 Delaware, (816) 471-6003. A
support group for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and the Alvin Ailey
Repertory Ensemble who perform at the Midland Theater. Outreach programs, in-school/after
school dance workshops are presented by Ailey dance teachers.
Missouri Town Musicians and Dancers, (816) 373-9147. Performers feature
pioneer era music and dancing at scheduled events at Missouri Town 1855 at Lake
Jacomo.
Missouri Valley Folklife Society, (816) 691-8717. Offers English Country
dancing once a month with live music. Call for location and information.
Westport Ballet School, 3925 Main, (816) 531-4330. A semiprofessional
ballet company performing a diverse and energetic repertoire, ranging from classical
to contemporary ballet. An annual children's series is presented each spring
at the Folly Theatre, and each summer the company presents its outdoor summer
series, "Under the Stars," in Westport.
